The Evolution of the Sukumar Direction Style: Flawed Heroes:
Well, we all know Sukumar represents his heroes are dealt with a combination of both grey traits and Negative shades. The heroes main arc was been driven by egoistic personality and obsessive possessiveness on a particular concept.
These character things in Sukumar films can be easily witness by people in the movies of Naga Chaitanya in 100% love movie extremely egoistic about academic rankings with Heroine Tamanna and in Allu Arjun’s Aarya 2, the protagonist exhibits an obsessive, almost toxic possessiveness toward his friend Ajay (Navdeep).
If we take Sukumar career in two parts, Sukumar movies before 100% love and after it. The director has completely changed his directing pattern and story telling after this movie. Immediately he directed “1-Nenokkadine” movie with Tollywood Super Star Mahesh Babu.

In this movie, Sukumar explores psychological complexity through Gautam’s struggle with Integrative Agnosia, a condition that blurs the lines between reality and hallucination. Likewise, in Rangasthalam also, the directed has taken a gutsy step that, he showcased Mega Power Star Ramcharan character, Chitti Babu has a partial Hear Impairment often refers himself as sound engineer in the movie.

Authors Personal View:
When I first watched 1: Nenokkadine in the theatre with my friends, I actually thought it was a flop because I couldn’t understand the movie in just one sitting. But after watching it a second time, I realized the brilliance of the Sukumar Direction Style. Now, I never miss a first-day-first-show because the Sukumar Direction Style always offers something new to discover.
Even though some scenes were cut for length later on, that movie changed everything for me. From that day on, I decided that every Sukumar film is a ‘First Day First Show’ must-watch. In my opinion, Gautam and Chitti Babu remain his two best-written heroes.
Creating Fear: Why Villains Matter in the Sukumar Direction Style:
We need to take separate page for the Sukumar villains in the movie. If the protagonist doesn’t have a perfect opponent, none of the Sukumar heroes get this kind of emotional connect with the audience and this gets us to the concept Sukumar films. To be honest there were many times that Sukumar’s villains often overshadow the heroes.
Best examples are President from Rangasthalam and Krishnamurthy from Nannaku Prematho movies. The villains were look super cool in the movies, but the intentions and subtle actions, will surely send some chills down our spine.

Lets take a deeper dig at this topic, for a moment when we watch S.S.Rajamouli’s villains the introduction scenes of them itself shows us they are more excessive violence and bloodshed. Due to these kinds of scenes, we as audience feel that the villain character is larger than life character. To defeat this larger-than-life villain, we really crave for a larger-than-life hero character. Due to this, we witness loads of heroism in SSR movies.
But coming to the Sukumar movies, there a twist always plays around us, as we mentioned before, Sukumar villains has a realistic touch in them. Due to this reason while watching a Sukumar film we as audience don’t wait for a larger-than-life hero to come and defeat the villain. We ourselves feel like taking him down.
Till today what he writes about the villain in the movies will automatically connects for a common man or people like us. BY using the simple formula Sukumar manages to get our excitement kicking in at the climax portions, where we watch the villain loosing.
More Than Just Love Interests: The Functional Heroines of Sukumar Cinema:
Coming to the concept heroines, this is not so common in Telugu films. If you remove the heroine character from a big-ticket commercial film, it doesn’t make any difference. But within the Sukumar Direction Style, the role of a heroine is often functional and deeply interlinked with the plot.
Leaving Ranagsthalam and Jagadam keeping aside, without heroines Sukumar movies cannot move forward. Nannaku Prematho movie is the best example for this particular concept. Abhiram’s (Jr.NTR) character cannot make his move without Dhivyanka he doesn’t plan his next moves.
In Nannaku Prematho, the heroine is a vital ‘cog in the machine.’ Without Rakul Preet’s character inadvertently assisting in the ‘Butterfly Effect’—from the table angle to the painting placement—Abhiram could never have hacked Krishnamurthy’s bank password.

To make this point clearly in Sukumar style everything is interlinked. If there was no character like Mahalakshmi in 100% love wouldn’t even have a conflict because there were ego clashes between the Balu (Naga Chaitanya) and Mahalakshmi (Tamanna) characters, the story took new twists and turns. And this ego concept has helped the movie to achieve its beautiful climax.
And the same with Sameera from the movie 1 Nenokkadine, played by Kriti Sanon. She played a role of a journalist and she plays he major role by helping Gowtham cracking his mysterious past. And in Sukumar Arya series, the story itself revolve around the heroines. Jagadam and Ranagsthalam, these 2 films of Sukumar have a separate cult fan base. In both these movies the heroines don’t have much to do and its ok, because those two films are hero characterization driven films.
The “Checkmate” Moment: The Ability to Connect Dots:
A signature of the Sukumar Direction Style is the ‘checkmate’ screenplay, where every small detail eventually connects. We can also name it as “checkmate”. The hero blocks all the ways for the villain, so that he cannot make any other move and this occurs because the hero connects all the dots.
Somewhere the antagonist leaves a loophole, and the hero takes the advantage of this loophole and finishes his game. Best set of examples are Rangasthalam, 1 – Nenokkadine and Nannaku Prematho movies. But out of these three, logically Nannaku Prematho is the best.

At the starting of the film, we see NTR inserting some pipes underground. That whole process was shown in a song. So, everyone thought that, those scenes were used for just a show put up for the song. But here comes the terrific payoff! It was a trap for Krishnamurthy.
There is a scene where abhiram starts a company called “KMC” at the very beginning of the film. As audience we know the payoff. Apparently, the same repeats in Ramacharan Rangasthalam movie too that, the srimannaryana lip sync scene and the childhood path discovery scenes from the movie 1- Nenokkadine are the best examples Sukumar connecting dots.
In a quick short view:
One of the most satisfying elements of the Sukumar Direction Style is the “Payoff.” Sukumar, a former math teacher, constructs his scripts like complex equations. In Nannaku Prematho, the pipes laid during a simple song sequence aren’t just for show—they are the literal foundation of the hero’s trap. Whether it’s the lip-syncing in Rangasthalam or the childhood path discovery in 1: Nenokkadine, Sukumar ensures that no detail is accidental.
Repeat Watching: Worth Value movies:
Sukumar’s films have exceptionally high repeat value because of his layered screenplays, hidden intellectual details, and psychological character depth that often go unnoticed during a first watch. Amongst all of the movies, Mahesh Babu’s 1 – Nenokkadine and Ramcharan’s Rangasthalam has holds a special repeated value worth movies in small screens in Telugu. Both the movies driven the audience with the director’s screenplay and storytelling.
In 1 Nenokkadine is a cult classic psychological thriller. The first watch can be confusing due to the non-linear hallucinations, but subsequent viewings clarify the brilliance of the screenplay and Mahesh Babu’s character study. Apparently, in the Rangasthalam movie Widely considered his masterpiece.
Every rewatch reveals new details in the rural rustic background and Ram Charan’s performance as the hearing-impaired Chitti Babu. The subtle political cues and emotional beats hit harder once you know the ending.
IMDB professional profile of his recurring cinematographer of Pushpa – 2 Movie: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1903312/
The ultimate evolution of the Sukumar Direction Style is clearly seen in the massive world of Pushpa 2: The Rule. While his earlier films were experiments in psychology and rural drama, the ‘Red Sandalwood’ universe is a masterclass in world-building. Every time you rewatch the forest sequences or the syndicate meetings, you notice how Sukumar has built a complex ecosystem where every character, from the woodcutters to the high-level smugglers, has a specific purpose.

It’s not just a mass movie; it’s a detailed study of power and greed that demands multiple viewings just to catch all the hidden details in the background. With Pushpa 3: The Rampage already being teased, it’s clear that Sukumar’s layered storytelling is only getting bigger and better

Major other Key Factors for Sukumar’s Films:
We must really need to appreciate the music work of the Devi Sri Prasad DSP for his soulful music in Sukumar movies. Especially the BGM in 1-Nenokkadine for Gautam’s childhood was completely out sanding. The last 30 minutes music and BGM of the film has taken the movie to whole different kind level. It was so intense and emotional carrying the same with the actor’s performance.
As well the same continues in the Rangasthalam movie too for his brother Kumar Bbau (Aadi Pinishetty) “O rayyo” song. By watching that song on screen our hearts drenched in grief. And at the final climax, after the death of Prakash Raj scene, Ramcharan and Samantha walk together and it follows an adrenaline bgm. Its not an ordinary BGM it’s an audience win that payoff justice for Kumar Babu’s death.
